Neodymium magnets overall, are the world's strongest permanent magnets. Although, not all neodymium Bar magnets share the same characteristics. The Grade of a Neodymium Magnet will provide an idea of the strength of a neodymium magnet. The most common commercially available grades generally run N35- N52. N35 is the weakest (but by no means weak) and N52 is currently the strongest. There are some special use grades as well. A larger piece of neodymium of a weaker grade may be ultimately stronger than a smaller but higher grade piece. How does a rare earth magnet work?
Rare earth magnets are derived from an ore that is primarily mined in China. Two elements are pulled from that ore that are used in the manufacturing of very strong neodymium magnets & somewhat less strong Samarium. These elements are combined with other elements to form an alloy. Neodymium (Nd) is mixed with iron (Fe) & boron (B) This is where the symbols NdFeB come from which you may have seen. Samarium (Sm) is combined with Cobalt (SmCo).
During manufacturing these alloys are magnetized. Differing structures within the alloys allow them to be magnetized to much higher levels than any materials before. The current technology can produce up to N52 neodymium magnets, which is the strongest permanent magnetic material in the world.

Why are neodymium magnets dangerous?

This happens so quickly and with so much force that If your finger gets between them during this it can and probably will, break your finger.
Children (of the put everything in my mouth age) have been known to take small neodymium magnets into their mouths. If swallowed the magnets may attract while in the very sensitive organs (stomach or intestines) and pinch the linings.

3 The strong Rare-Earth Magnetics Association is not aware of any positive or negative health effects from handling rare-earth magnets. CMS Magnetics & Magnets For Sale recommends however that pregnant women not handle very strong neodymium Bar magnets.
4 The strong magnetic fields of neodymium magnets can damage items such as television, computer monitors, credit cards, bank cards, computers, diskettes and other data carriers, video tapes, mechanical watches, & hearing aids.
5 When handling super strong magnets Rare-Earth magnetic products are very powerful and can accelerate a great speeds toward each other and ferrous material. You should always wear gloves and eye protection when handling strong rare-earth magnets.
6 You should avoid having constant contact with magnets of any size and keep a distance of at least 3 feet to large magnets.
7 Under no circumstances should you try to machine strong Neodymium magnets! These rare earth magnets will crack, shatter and create a flammable toxic dust.
8 Strong Neodymium magnets will lose their strong magnetic properties if heated above (150 C).
9 All of our strong magnets are plated with a thin layer of nickel, nickel-copper-nickel or gold. This layer (in particular gold) can wear down in the normal use of the magnet over time.
