These devices come in various grades and shapes and sizes. Each grade possesses its own maximum energy product and Curie temperature range; N52 being one of the more frequently used grades. Some higher temperature versions feature letters after their grade number to denote their operating temperature range.

Neodymium can corrode in humid environments and should therefore be protected with nickel, copper, or zinc plating to ward off corrosion. Drilling this material must be avoided as heat generated can lead to demagnetization as well as remove any anticorrosive coating on its surface resulting in demagnetization and removal of its protective surface layer.

Neodymium magnets (Neo, NdFeB) are among the strongest permanent magnets commercially available, being over ten times stronger than ceramic(ferrite) and alnico magnets. Their impressive holding forces make them suitable for small spaces. Unfortunately, however, their fragility necessitates extra caution as even minor forces can break or chip them; hence they should always be handled with great caution.

Neo magnets have become an indispensable part of modern technologies; PC and laptop manufacturers, engine workshops and high tech devices rely heavily on them.
