Magnet Safety

WARNING: PLEASE READ BEFORE USE

DISCLAIMER: The buyer is required to thoroughly read and understand these instructions prior to using the magnets. The buyer, upon using these magnets, assumes full responsibility for any damage to the magnets and any injuries caused by improper handling. If these terms are not acceptable, please promptly return the magnets.

WARNING: Handle magnets with care; they can be dangerous regardless of size. Improper use may result in serious injury or damage. Keep these magnets out of children's reach. Ensure that individuals with electronic medical implants or devices steer clear of magnets. Also, avoid placing magnets near electronic items sensitive to magnetic fields, such as CRT monitors, credit cards, and hard drives. Taking these precautions helps protect both people and sensitive electronic equipment.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Consistently wear thick gloves when handling magnets, regardless of their size, until you are accustomed to their strength and behavior.
  • It is strongly advised to use eye protection to prevent potential injuries while handling magnets, especially until you are familiar with their properties.
  • Maintain a minimum distance of 2 feet between magnets and between magnets and any steel objects. This precaution is necessary to prevent unexpected snapping together, which can be hazardous.

MAGNET SAFETY WARNING: HANDLE WITH CAUTION

  • Magnets are inherently brittle and can easily break upon collision with another magnet or a magnetic surface.
  • Broken magnet fragments are sharp and can be propelled with force. Always use gloves and eye protection when handling larger or extremely powerful magnets.
  • Exercise caution while handling. Larger magnets can cause significant injuries due to pinching. For safety, magnets smaller than 3/4” should only be used by children over 10 under adult supervision. Magnets larger than 3/4” should be exclusively used by adults.
  • Small magnets, including magnetic pushpins, toys, and similar items, present a choking hazard. If swallowed, they can be extremely dangerous. Immediate medical attention is required if magnets are ingested.

SMALL MAGNET SAFETY

Please note, magnets small enough to be swallowed fall under the CPSC's classification of small parts and present a choking hazard. Ingestion of these magnets can be fatal. Refer to the diagram below to identify magnets in this category.

DISCLAIMER FOR SMALL MAGNETS:

For the safety of children, magnets small enough to fit into the adjacent tube are designated solely for commercial use.

LARGE MAGNET HANDLING GUIDELINES

  • Magnets exceeding ¾” in any dimension are considered large magnets.
  • These large magnets are not toys and require careful handling to avoid potential harm.
  • Despite seeming sturdy, all magnets are delicate and prone to breaking. Large magnets can shatter into sharp pieces if they collide with another magnet or a steel surface.

SAFE SEPARATION OF LARGE MAGNETS

  • Be cautious when detaching large magnets joined together. For separation, rest one magnet's edge on a stable, non-magnetic surface like a wooden table, letting the other magnet hang off the edge.
  • Securely hold the magnet on the table. Using a steady, strong grip, push down on the second magnet. The goal is to slide the magnets apart, not to pull them directly apart.
  • After successfully separating them, ensure they are kept at a safe distance from one another to avoid reattachment.

General Rules:

  1. Strong Neodymium magnets Grade N52 Some Safety Considerations
  2. Children should not be allowed to handle neodymium magnets especially at N52 Grade.  Small magnets are a choking hazard and should never be swallowed or inserted into any part of the body.
  3. Individuals with pacemakers should not handle strong rare-earth magnets . Magnetic fields can affect the operation of these devices.
  4. The Rare-Earth Magnetics Association is not aware of any positive or negative health effects from handling rare-earth magnets. CMS Magnetics & Magnets For Sale recommends however that pregnant women not handle very strong rare-earth magnets.
  5. The strong magnetic fields of neodymium magnets can damage items such as television, computer monitors, credit cards, bank cards, computers, diskettes and other data carriers, video tapes, mechanical watches, & hearing aids.
  6. When handling magnets Rare-Earth magnetic products are very powerful and can accelerate a great speeds toward each other and ferrous material. You should always wear gloves and eye protection when handling strong rare-earth magnets.
  7. You should avoid having constant contact with magnets of any size and keep a distance of at least 3 feet to large magnets.
  8. Under no circumstances should you try to machine Neodymium magnets! These rare earth magnets will crack, shatter and create a flammable toxic dust.Neodymium magnets will lose their magnetic properties if heated above (150 C).
  9. All of magnets are plated with a thin layer of nickel, nickel-copper-nickel or gold. This layer (in particular gold) can wear down in the normal use of the magnet over time.
  10. Any tool or toy, neodymium magnets can be fun and useful, but must always be treated with care.
