Engineering with Rectangular Magnets with Holes
Because Neodymium (NdFeB) is a sintered, brittle material, drilling into a standard block is nearly impossible. Our countersunk blocks are manufactured with pre-formed holes and reinforced with a Triple-Layer Ni-Cu-Ni coating to withstand mounting pressure.
Critical Polarity: North vs. South Face
When using neodymium countersunk block magnets to snap two surfaces together, polarity is essential:
- Magnet-to-Steel: Polarity does not matter; any countersunk block will work.
- Magnet-to-Magnet: You must use a "North" face and a "South" face magnet to ensure they attract. If you use two of the same, they will repel.
Installation & Safety Best Practices
- Avoid Over-Tightening: Neodymium is brittle. Use a manual screwdriver or a low-torque setting on your drill to prevent cracking the magnet during installation.
- Screw Compatibility: Most of our blocks are designed for imperial flat-head screws. Ensure the screw head is completely recessed to prevent chipping.
- Temperature Limits: Standard grades are rated for 80°C (176°F). For high-heat environments like engine bays, look for our "SH" or "UH" high-temp rated blocks.

- Will the screw reduce the magnet's strength? The hole slightly reduces the total volume of magnetic material, but for mounting purposes, the concentrated flux around the screw often provides a more secure hold.
- Can these be used outdoors? Standard Nickel plating is best for dry, indoor use. For outdoor projects, we recommend our Epoxy or Rubber-coated options to prevent oxidation.
- How do I safely separate them? Never pull them apart directly. Use a sliding motion to separate countersunk blocks, especially N52 grades which can exert over 40 lbs of force.
