CMS Magnetics engineers commercial-grade rubber coated neodymium cup magnets (protective pot magnets), designed for non-marring, scratch-free magnetic mounting on delicate painted steel, automotive body panels, and architectural glass. Encapsulated in heavy-duty vulcanized Santoprene® rubber or black elastomer, these specialized magnetic bases drastically elevate the friction coefficient to resist vertical shear sliding while shielding the internal sintered NdFeB multi-pole core from corrosion, water ingress, and mechanical chipping.
Rubber surface drastically increases friction, resisting sideways slide on vertical steel walls.
Cushions delicate automotive paint, powder-coat finishes, and glass panels from metal abrasions.
Fully jacketed elastomer blocks moisture, salt spray, and road grime from reaching the NdFeB alloy.
Available with male threaded studs, female threaded bushings, or central countersunk clearance holes.
Standard raw steel cup magnets provide exceptional perpendicular (tensile) holding power when attached directly to flat carbon steel. However, when mounted on vertical steel surfaces, a bare metal-on-metal interface suffers from a low friction coefficient (μ ≈ 0.15–0.20), causing the magnet to slide downward under as little as 15% to 20% of its rated pull load. Rubber coated neodymium cup magnets solve this critical physical limitation by pairing a multi-pole NdFeB magnetic circuit with an exterior elastomer jacket.
| Magnet Base Type | Surface Friction (μ) | Vertical Shear Efficiency | Surface Protection | Environmental Resistance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare Steel Cup Magnet | Low (μ ≈ 0.15) | 15% – 20% of rated pull | Risk of scratching paint | Indoor only (edges chip in weather) |
| Rubber Coated Pot Magnet | High (μ ≈ 0.60–0.75) | 50% – 70% of rated pull | 100% scratch-free & non-marring | Waterproof, UV & outdoor salt spray resistant |
CMS Magnetics produces rubber coated mounting bases configured with standard imperial and metric mechanical fasteners to integrate directly with lighting fixtures, surveillance cameras, antenna brackets, and solar accessories:
Mounting rooftop emergency lights, taxi beacons, fleet antennas, and auxiliary LED off-road bars without drilling holes into clear-coat paint.
Securing temporary promotional graphics, steel door signs, and POP retail displays without leaving scuffs or residue.
Instant temporary fixturing for wireless surveillance cameras, optical inspection sensors, and laser leveling gear on structural steel beams.
