What is Neodymium Magnets

About the Terminology

Normally the Neodymium Magnets refer to Sintered Neodymium Iron Boron Magnets, or Sintered NdFeB Magnets in short. Since Neodymium element is one of the rare earth elements, so the Neodymium Magnets are also called Rare Earth Magnets.

Bonded Neodymium Magnets are made with the Neodymium Magnet powder bonded with the binding materials, which can be nylon, plastics, or rubber. The Bonded Neodymium Magnets can be made as complex shapes but the strengths are much weaker than the Sintered Neodymium Magnets. Since the applications of the Bonded Neodymium Magnets are limited, we only provide them as custom order.

SmCo Magnet is also Rare Earth Magnet since the samarium is one of the rare earth elements. But in today's terminology, people use Rare Earth Manget to refer to the Neodymium Magnet and SmCo Magnet to refer to the Samarium Cobalt Magnet instead of calling them Rare Earth Magnet.

The Sintered Neodymium Magnet was invented in early 1980s. Since its invention, the magnet world and its applications experienced a revolutionary change, which majorly because of the unbelievable strength it provides. A classic Ceramic Magnet is about 3,850 gauss, but a grade N52 Neodymium Magnet can provide 14,800 gauss, which is 14.7 times of holding power in pound. This is why the Neodymium Magnets are also called Super Strong Magnets or Super Powerful Magnets. Please refer to the Magnetic Characteristics of Neodymium Magnets for the detailed specs of our Neodymium Magnets.

Another reason for the increasing popularity of the Neodymium Magnets is the low cost. The price for the Neodymium Magnets was once ten times high than today's price. The price dropped a lot since the major producers of the Neodymium Magnets shifted to China since mid to late 80s.

As the NdFeB Magnets price went down, the practice to replace other magnets with Neodymium Magnets became more affordable. As of today, NdFeB Magnets can be found in lots of consumer products. For example, iPhone, iPad, and their cases, all the mobil phones, speakers, telephones, computer hard drives, hybrid cars, DC motors, odometers and sensors, which were not  economically feasible before the price dropped.

Neodymium Magnets Safeties

Neodymium Magnet is not hazardous material unless they are in the powder format. When the neodymium magnet power is inhaled, it can cause problems to your lung. Otherwise, neodymium magnets are pretty safe to be used in appliances, food processing machines and industries.
